There are cars that were built to be fast. There are cars that were built to be practical. And then there are cars that seem to have been pulled from the future.
The DeLorean DMC-12 was one of those cars.
Even today, more than four decades after the first production cars rolled out of the factory in Northern Ireland, the DeLorean remains instantly recognizable. You don't need to see a badge to know what you're looking at. The sharp wedge profile. The brushed stainless-steel body. The dramatic gull-wing doors. The low roofline and razor-straight surfaces.
It doesn't look like a car that simply came from the early 1980s.
It looks like somebody designed a car for the future and accidentally sent it backward in time.
A Car Born From a Different Idea
The story begins with John Z. DeLorean, a celebrated automotive executive who had spent years inside the American auto industry before leaving General Motors in 1973. His ambition was to create something different from the increasingly conventional cars being produced by the major manufacturers: a distinctive, modern sports car that could compete with European grand tourers while incorporating new ideas about safety, efficiency, and construction.
The result would become the DMC-12.
But the DeLorean wasn't simply an American car with an unusual body. Its development became an international collaboration.
The exterior was created by legendary Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign, whose work would influence some of the most memorable automobiles of the era. The design was deliberately dramatic, with a low wedge-shaped silhouette and incredibly clean surfaces.
Then came Lotus.
Lotus Engineering was brought in to turn the ambitious prototype into something that could actually be produced. Lotus developed the car's steel backbone chassis and production engineering, drawing heavily on engineering concepts associated with the Lotus Esprit.
That combination is a huge part of what makes the DeLorean fascinating.
Italian styling. British engineering. American ambition. Northern Irish production.
It was a truly international automobile.
The Art Was in the Lines
The DeLorean's greatest achievement wasn't necessarily its performance.
It was its appearance.
The stainless-steel body allowed the designers to create something that looked almost sculptural. Rather than hiding the material beneath conventional automotive paint, the DeLorean exposed its brushed stainless steel to the world.
The result was unlike almost anything else on the road.
The body seemed to be made from planes and angles rather than traditional curves. The sharp front end flowed into the long wedge-shaped profile, while the rear section dropped away dramatically. Every line seemed intentional.
And then there were the doors.
The gull-wing doors weren't simply a styling gimmick. They became the visual signature of the entire automobile, rising above the roof and making the car look even more like a machine from another era.
It was automotive design pushed toward sculpture.
And perhaps that is why the DeLorean has survived culturally long after its production ended.
The Numbers Don't Tell the Whole Story
Underneath all that futuristic styling was a rear-mounted 2.8-liter PRV V6 developed by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo. In DeLorean form, the engine produced roughly 130 horsepower and 153 lb-ft of torque. Performance was respectable for the period, but hardly revolutionary, with real-world 0–60 mph testing generally taking around ten seconds.
The original plan was to make the car considerably more affordable. The "12" in DMC-12 was tied to the original target price of $12,000. By the time the car reached production, however, the price had climbed dramatically, reaching approximately $25,000 for the 1981 model year and increasing again afterward.
Production was short-lived.
The original DeLorean was produced for the 1981, 1982 and 1983 model years, with production ending after the company ran into severe financial problems. The exact production figure has been debated, but approximately 9,000 cars were built. One frequently cited figure is 8,987.
For a car that existed for such a short period, its cultural impact was enormous.
And then came Back to the Future.
Suddenly, the strange stainless-steel sports car wasn't just a failed automotive experiment. It was a time machine.
The DeLorean became something bigger than the company that built it.
It became an icon.
Why the DeLorean Still Works
Part of the reason the DeLorean continues to inspire artists, designers and collectors is that the design never really belonged to one particular decade.
The car is undeniably an artifact of the early 1980s, but its visual language is surprisingly timeless.
The stainless steel. The monochromatic surfaces. The black accents. The hard geometric lines. The gull-wing silhouette.
Everything about it feels deliberate.
There is a confidence to the design that doesn't need excessive decoration. It doesn't need flames, stripes, bright colors or complicated graphics to get attention.
The shape does the work.
That is exactly what makes the DeLorean such an interesting subject for another form of design.
